I was looking at an article about Global Art on the internet and found this link which I thought was quite helpful.

“Global Culture” is a phenomenon currently widely discussed, often meant to criticize global economy and global marketing strategies to threaten “local cultures” and change the large cultural diversity into some general superficial and uniform “McDonald” culture. On the other hand, still too often non-western
contemporary art is viewed as “ethnic” and not on equal terms as contemporary western art. We classify before we really look.

The term “Global Art” is a term I have opted to indicate artists who do not suffer from any loss of identity by globalization, but who create art which is highly idiosyncratic though simultaneously very accessible to viewers from very different places in the world. Such artists found a way to express their existence in the world as a synthesis between their individual specific cultural roots and their participation in global culture. Maybe less radical but still more exceptional in their substantial meaning.”

To do this Blog Assignment I decided to use technology as my form of communication. The sites I used were MySpace and FaceBook, which consisted of friends from overseas and also friends and family who are local. I asked them for their thoughts, views and understanding of what Global Art is. Not a lot of people replied back to my post but these are the responses I recieved from my posts.

Arun Carthelis: “There are a lot of artists around the world and their art is based related to their cultural right, basically global art brings these cultural influenced are together with Western Culture..”

Monish Nair: “I don’t really know what global art means or what it really is but i have seen a few works with peace signs, country flags and things like that on them which were kind of interesting. But as long as it’s interesting and eye catching I will like it.”

Olivia Lambarth: “I think Global art is work that is influenced by other countries or of issues going on around the world. I don’t really have an opinion on global artwork but i do find it different.”

Mehul Prakash: “Umm Global art? Art from around the world, other countries lol”

Those were the responses I got from my post.

This second animation was made in Motion Design and is called Roundy’s Misfortune. I used a combination of hand drawn images, photoshop and After Effects. I worked really hard on this and I’m reeeeeeeeally pleased with the end results :)

I found this work on the top floor of the Museum which I found pretty cool because it had to do with heights and a bit of Vertigo for people who can’t stand high places or planes.

It is called Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero-sen 22

“The Zero aeroplane is an iconic World War 2 object which many Museum visitors come to see. It is displayed in its own gallery that has viewing platforms from which visitors can have a birds-eye-view of the plane.” A Japanese Warbird.

This photograph is of the stairs I had to climb to get upto level 2 and level 3 of the Auckland Museum. I thought it was pretty cool because of the semi ‘spiral’ effect that the stairs made. I thought this was a good photograph because it was taken from a good height and I thought the view of lookin down the stairs was quite Vertigo-ish..because of the whole looking down and possible feeling a little dizzy.

I think these worked much better than the ones I first tried to make.  I replaced the older ones with more recent photos I took.

Today we did scale which was a little confusing at first but turned out to be pretty fun. The aim was to use the shape of the class room (studio 4) and put it into scale to create a  whole new room using the same shape as our class. I found this fun because we got to create our own room. 1:50 ratio

This is the room I made in Scale. I put in a stage, a dancefloor, a bar, a snack and food bar, three tables, restrooms, and five couches as a relaxing area. This got my imagination going because I spent a lot of time thinking of how I wanted to set this up and imagining how it would turn out if this were to really made.

In class we watched some videos which helped us understand a bit more about Drawing Machines. I really enjoyed watching these videos because it showed me how funa and amazing it is to build a drawing machine, i already had heaps of fun in class, it got me thinking about doing something like this out of class.

Some of the artists the tutor had mentioned and which had interested me were Rebecca Horn, Peter Fishli, Jean Tinguely and David Weiss. I had a look at each of their works on Youtube which I decided to add to my blog because I found them pretty awesome :D!

Today we did a drawing workshop called Drawing Machines with tutor Oliver Kraft. I found this one the MOST FUN because we did some really messy stuff with paint and it was hands on. In the morning we had to draw objects as we saw them, then with another part of our body (not using our hands) which was really funny because i tried with my mouth which failed and then with my pencil attached to my elbow which is really harder than it looks! But it was really fun. In the afternoon our task was to create our own drawing machine in partners which i found the most fun. The first idea my partner and i came up with was to attach a ruler to the edge of the desk, put string through the hole in the ruler and attach a chalk or felt on the bottom of the string with a piece of paper on the floor, this should have made marks on the piece of paper when pushed… It worked but wasn’t as effective as we hoped.

The next thing we decided to do was to draw with chalk on a car tire and then roll it across a large bit of paper.

I found that process really fun because we sat in the sun and drew patterns on the tire with chalk, then rolled over the paper.

Our third attempt was with a large bit of paper on the wall, and a paint brush hanging on the bits of wood on the ceiling in our cell. we put paint on the brush and pushed it towards the paper which created paint marks on the paper. This was the most funnest because we got really messy.

This is painting is called The Annunciation, c.1448 by “Italian Early Renaissance Painter” Fra Carnevale.

I liked this painting because I thought it showed a good 3 dimensional perspective of an outdoors area. I find this piece interesting because there isn’t too much happening yet there is a scene on its own happening. The buildings fit in really well with this painting.

The Last Supper is a beautiful painting by artist Leonardo da Vinci. It was made between 1495-98 and stands at a large size of 460 x 880cm. This painting is made from tempura and mixed media on plaster. I really like this painting because of the way da Vinci has used perspective in the painting. It seems that it is somehow made to draw the veiwers attetion to the center of the image where Christ is sitting. I like the way the use of persperctive has been used to really create the feeling of the room and its sort of like it brings everything in the painting together.
