Tuesday 4th August

In class we watched some videos which helped us understand a bit more about Drawing Machines. I really enjoyed watching these videos because it showed me how funa and amazing it is to build a drawing machine, i already had heaps of fun in class, it got me thinking about doing something like this out of class.

Some of the artists the tutor had mentioned and which had interested me were Rebecca Horn, Peter Fishli, Jean Tinguely and David Weiss. I had a look at each of their works on Youtube which I decided to add to my blog because I found them pretty awesome :D :D!

Jean Tinguely:

Rebecca Horn:

Peter Fishli and David Weiss: (The Way Things Go)

And another random video I found on Youtube which was by the “students on the BA(Hons) Fine Art for Design degree at the Batley School of Art and Design”:

Tuesday 4th August

Today we did a drawing workshop called Drawing Machines with tutor Oliver Kraft. I found this one the MOST FUN because we did some really messy stuff with paint and it was hands on. In the morning we had to draw objects as we saw them, then with another part of our body (not using our hands) which was really funny because i tried with my mouth which failed and then with my pencil attached to my elbow which is really harder than it looks! But it was really fun. In the afternoon our task was to create our own drawing machine in partners which i found the most fun. The first idea my partner and i came up with was to attach a ruler to the edge of the desk, put string through the hole in the ruler and attach a chalk or felt on the bottom of the string with a piece of paper on the floor, this should have made marks on the piece of paper when pushed… It worked but wasn’t as effective as we hoped.

The next thing we decided to do was to draw with chalk on a car tire and then roll it across a large bit of paper.

Youtube Video:

I found that process really fun because we sat in the sun and drew patterns on the tire with chalk, then rolled over the paper.

Our third attempt was with a large bit of paper on the wall, and a paint brush hanging on the bits of wood on the ceiling in our cell. we put paint on the brush and pushed it towards the paper which created paint marks on the paper. This was the most funnest because we got really messy.

Perspective follow up..

I did a bit of follow up research on Perspective drawing and painting artworks..

Fra Carnevale, The Annunciation, c.1448 This is painting is called The Annunciation, c.1448 by “Italian Early Renaissance Painter” Fra Carnevale.

I liked this painting because I thought it showed a good 3 dimensional perspective of an outdoors area. I find this piece interesting because there isn’t too much happening yet there is a scene on its own happening. The buildings fit in really well with this painting.

leonardo_da_vinci_the last supperThe Last Supper is a beautiful painting by artist Leonardo da Vinci. It was made between 1495-98 and stands at a large size of 460 x 880cm. This painting is made from tempura and mixed media on plaster. I really like this painting because of the way da Vinci has used perspective in the painting. It seems that it is somehow made to draw the veiwers attetion to the center of the image where Christ is sitting. I like the way the use of persperctive has been used to really create the feeling of the room and its sort of like it brings everything in the painting together.

Perspective

Wednesday 29th July

Today we did Perspective. I thought this was a little challenging but i did enjoy it.

We had to make a room using Perspective..

DSCF2009 I thought I made the bed a little too long but the process of creating a room was really fun because we got to desing it ourselves, just that we had to use the lines but this was really fun!

I did some follow up research on some paintings which had perspective used in them..

Line Dynamics with Karl

Thursday 23rd July.

Today we did a workshope with Karl called Line Dynamics. I found this class quite interesting as we got to work on photoshop as well as hand work in the afternoon. Our first aim was to collect 4-6 images off the internet..

With our chosen images we then had to re open them up in photoshop and using another layer on the top of the original images we had to use different media off photoshop to create lines. I found this pretty fun :D

We had another activity which took place in the afternoon. This time we had to make photcopies of actual images we found in magazines etc and do almost exactly what we did on photoshop except we had to do it physically with paint, pen, masking tape and whatever else we wanted to use.

All of these had mixes of pen, pencil, paint and masking tape :)

Christian Boltanski :]

My chosen artist is Christian Boltanski. Born in Paris, France in 1944, is well known artist Christian Boltanski. Amazingly he is a self taught painter, sculptor, photographer and film maker. Boltanski’s photographic artwork was what really caught my attention because of what his photographs show. They show links to memory, death and loss which is what I have been trying to do with my own photographs. His work is often shown as memorials of people who have disappeared, random photos of people or personal clothing or belongings of those who have passed away. What I really like about Boltanski’s photographs is the way he  portrays people who have passed away or have gone missing. One work in particular which I thoFaces ught portrayed and really showed the ‘disappearing’ idea is Faces, 1996.

Three faces pop up from the background, the transparency has been changed and to me it shows that these three particular people have ‘faded’ or disappeared. I thought this because it looks like the three faces have been pulled out of the photo in the background and enlarged, possibly transferred on to transparent paper which shows the transparency change, and set up near where they are sitting. It could even just be randomly layed out as is. There are other thoughts which came across my mind when I looked at this photograph. It could also be dealing with issues of death or loss. The transparency change could show some sort of lost memory of these three people, or even some kind of importance. I also really enjoy looking at some other works of Boltanski’s. Some of his installations are very beautiful. What I like about them is the fact that when looking at photos of people who have lamps surrounding them and are all linked up with other photos like a memorial for them, it sends a sort of calming presence and really is a beautiful thing to see.

This work is definatley the closest to memorial photographs. I really like how there are heaps of photographs put together with lamps lighting them up. To me it brightens up the smiles of the photographs and makes this image a lot stronger. In a way this has a mysterious calming feel when looking at the work, it sort of puts you to ease beacuase it looks like a beautiful thing to do for someone who was loved and had passed on. I included this artwork because I thought it relates quite well to my chosen theme.
